    The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs programmers write VistA in Standard MUMPS (or M) following a document that that sets standards for usability, manageability, and readability. This document is called the VA Programming Standards and Conventions document (or SAC). Any programmer wishing to modify, further develop, or even understand the VistA software should become very familiar with this document. Here is the current draft of that document in use within the VA.
